Thanks for using the Chatmag.com Java, and we suggest that if you wish to use IRC chat more often, please download an IRC client, such as mIRC. More information on IRC clients can be found in our IRC Clients information page.

The navigation menu on the left of this page contains links to all of Chatmag's Help Section, for information on IRC and Web based chat programs.

The Java Chat Window will Float and Full Screen, Use the Maximize Buttons to Float/Full Screen.

Please watch the channel for a few minutes to learn the particular channel's theme and chatting methods.

LOGGING IN AND NICKNAMES

When you are logged in, it automatically defaults to the nickname AnonXXXX.  (XXXX is a random series of numbers). You can change that "Anon"  typing in the box marked "Nickname" at the lower right of the chat window, and pressing Enter.

Most IRC channels prefer you use a nickname other than "Anon" or "Guest". A chosen nickname may be registered on the IRC networks, so if you choose a nickname that is registered, the IRC network will change your nickname to "GuestXXXX".

You will have to choose a nickname that is not registered. As an example, if you chose "newbie" as a nickname and it is registered, you can modify it by using an underscore, such as "newbie_user". Be creative, and you will find a nickname that suits you and is not registered to anyone else.

NICKNAME REGISTRATION

To Register a nickname on any IRC network, in your chat window, type the command:

/msg nickserv help register

Some IRC networks such as DalNet, use a different command, so check the message from the IRC network which appears in your chat window, but most use the /msg nickserv format.

PRIVATE MESSAGES
Private Messages show as buttons below the main window, click a button to see and respond to messages.

IRC COMMANDS
You can also use IRC commands in the chat window.

All commands begin with a /

/HELP  shows general help or help on the given command.
/LIST  lists all current channels.
/JOIN  to join a channel
/PART  to leave a channel (same as LEAVE)
/QUIT  exits your IRC session, (same as BYE and EXIT)
/NICK  changes your nickname. Note, if you are kicked, the nickname you are attempting to use is registered to someone else. Please choose another nickname.
/AWAY  leaves a message saying you're away or not paying attention
/WHOIS displays information about someone
/INVITE sends an invitation to another user
