A Poser is defined as
a person who is using a nickname denoting one gender, but is actually the
other. Posers assume the persona of that gender, for whatever reason.
Posers on chat should be distinguished
from those few on The Internet who have created fictitous personalities,
such as Hank Roth, the legend
in his own mind, or Mary
Romantic, who is in a category all his/her own. (Note: request for
a copy of Hank Roth's DD-214 or Veterans ID Card were unanswered).
Note however, there are some chat rooms
where assuming the identity of another person, or gender, is the norm.
The vast majority of Posers
will be found in the womens chat rooms, such as the Lesbian or Bifem rooms.
Most Posers are male, acting as if they are female.
You may occasionally
see the term HNG used instead of Poser. HNG stands for horny net geek,
a male posing as female, in order to coerce a woman to engage in a cyber
chat with them. Cyber chat is sexual in nature, a 'net encounter
with another person.
We cannot give any
fast and hard advise on busting Posers here. Some of the traditional
techniques, such as asking panty hose size, are easily overcome by HNG'S
doing a little research. Other questions that women would know can
also be found by a resourceful individual. A few things to observe
though may help one bust a HNG or Poser.
Trading pictures
is one method of identification. If you trade photo's, look at the
picture name. If it is a number, such as 0001.jpg, then this may not be
legitimate. Most people would name their pictures, not number them.
Some people will number them, so this is not accurate all the time.
Another thing one can do is save their downloaded pictures. If you get
the same picture twice, with different names, such as 0001.jpg and me.jpg,
then this would be a tip off.
By the way, you would be surprised at
the number of pictures named me.jpg. A picture incorporating a persons
name would be more plausible. Another consideration is the picture
itself, is it a stock professional looking photo, or taken at home?
It's not too difficult to see the difference, even between some of the
glamor studio shots, and a professional photo. HNG'S have a habit of stealing
professional stock photo's and using them as their own. This is not
a reliable method of assuring identification.
On some IRC chat
rooms, Voice Verification is used. This is when a chat room Operator
calls a particular person, and speaks to them, verifying gender.
This is the best method of determining whether a person is male or female.
If you as a female wish to be voice verified, check to see if the particular
chat room uses this method. In this case, giving your phone number
or calling someone is usually safe. Become a regular visitor to the
chat room and see who is there each day, or on some regular basis.
By becoming familiar with the regulars,
you will also gain some trust in the Operators. You do not have any
obligation to become voice verified, should you feel the least bit uncomfortable
with calling. One chat room is now having women record their voices
using the windows recorder, in order to verify. This seems to be
a safe method of verification.
It's really up to
the individual to determine who one is talking with. Most women will
instinctively know if a person is male or female, after a bit of conversation.
Which brings up another point, should a person private message you with
the opening statement, "hi, horny"? that usually is a dead giveaway of
a Poser.
The idea of chat
is to have fun, meet other people with whom you share common interests,
and perhaps meet someone suited to yourself. Don't let the Posers
spoil your fun by preventing you from enjoying yourself. In the long
run, they will be caught, and they will be the losers.
