Wikipedia,
the online encyclopedia, has for the past few weeks been the battle ground
between a controversial web site and it's critics. The format of
Wikipedia allows for user input and editing of individual entries, similar
to a "Blog. The controversial entry focuses on Perverted-Justice.com, an
online vigilante web site that has been the target of many articles taking
their methods to task. Perverted Justice operates a web site that
posts private conversations between volunteers and either Yahoo! or AOL
chatters.
The Perverted Justice volunteers cruise
teen and regional chat rooms, posing as minors, in an effort to entice
would be Internet predators to engage them in a private conversation.
The chat logs are then posted on the Perverted Justice web site, with contact
information of the person, including telephone numbers.
Chatmag posted an extensive
article last year regarding Perverted Justice, and our opposition to
their tactics.
One of the editors of Wikipedia approached
the owner of Perverted Justice, with the intention of placing an article
within Wikipedia featuring an overview of the group. Shortly after
the article first appeared, links and references to web sites and individuals
critical of Perverted Justice were added to the article.
The owner of Perverted Justice took
it upon himself to delete any and all references critical of his organization,
and an "edit" war ensued, with others replacing the links and references.
As fast as the critical sections were added, the owner of Perverted Justice
deleted the links.
This "edit" war caused the entire Wikipedia
article to be "locked down", preventing any more editing from occuring.
In the "Talk"
section, both sides involved in the issue traded accusations, and only
recently has the article itself been unlocked.
The links critical of Perverted Justice
remain intact within the Wikipedia article. During the time the article
was locked, it became known as one of the most hotly disputed articles
within Wikipedia.
