On Tuesday,
King Gyanendra of Nepal dismissed the government and Prime Minister.
Following this assumption of dictatorial power, the King shut off telephone
and Internet service into and out of Nepal. The King also suspended
several provisions of the constitution, including freedom of the press,
speech and expression, peaceful assembly, the right to privacy, and the
right against preventive detention.
Chat rooms
and discussion forums hosted on servers within Nepal fell silent, and forums
currently available are restricted to those hosted outside the country.
Many of the previously linked forums within Chatmag's directory are no
longer available, however active forums and chat rooms are still indexed.
Current
nations restricting Internet access include China, Cuba and North Korea.
Shortly before the attacks on the United States in 2001, the Taliban regime
in Afghanistan disconnected all Internet access.
