Wikinews, a sub
project of the Wikimedia Foundation, held an online conference with several
prominent 'bloggers on Saturday, Feb. 5th. The purpose of the conference
was to introduce bloggers to the concept of Wikinews, and to explore avenues
to integrate blogging into the Wikinews sections.
Blogging has come
into its own right as a news source, in many cases posting stories well
ahead of the main stream media. Blogging is the latest buzz word,
with bloggers in attendance at last year's political conventions, most
notably at the Democratic Convention.
The basic premise
of Wikinews, in their statement:
"We seek to create
a free source of news, where, provided that we can overcome the digital
divide, every human being is invited to contribute reports about events
large and small, either from direct experience, or summarized from elsewhere.
While Wikinews
aims to be a useful resource of its own, it will also provide an alternative
to proprietary news agencies like the Associated Press or Reuters; that
is, it will allow independent media outfits to get a high quality feed
of news free of charge to complement their own reporting.
Wikinews follows
key principles which have made Wikipedia and other Wikimedia web sites
what they are today: neutrality, free content, and an open decision making
process."
The first online
conference between Wikinews and bloggers discussed "how Wikinews can become
a part of the blogosphere, and how Wikinews content can be useful to blogs."
Topics included:
Wikinews RSS feeds:
What options are there, what can we expect? Using Wikinews
content in your blog. Providing content
from your blog to the Wikinews project. Linking to blogs. Providing photos.
One topic covered,
using RSS feeds for Wikinews, has spawned a temporary RSS feed on Blogspot,
until a permanent feed can be established.
Another topic
mentioned was the IM'ing between Bloggers, and how more lines of communication
can be opened between Wikinews and Bloggers, either via IM or IRC chat
channels.
One point of contention
is in the basic function of Wikinews versus blogging. Wikinews stories
are fluid, being edited on a continuous basis, whereas blogs tend to be
more a fixed, finished product. Some level of compromise would need
to be forthcoming to accommodate each style of editing.
Overall, the first
meeting was a positive step toward integrating Wikinews with bloggers.
