18 March 2006  Chatmag News.

In The United States, it is tax season, which runs until April 15th each year.  And, on The Internet, it's phishing season all year around.

Phishing is a term used to denote a theft of identity attack. An email will be received which seems to come from a company or government office, but is designed to lead the reciepient to a false web site, and to a form requesting private information. The form, and the web site, are not legitimate.

The latest phishing spoof is an email that appears to be from The  Internal Revenue Service, stating that the email reciepient is due a tax refund, and contains a link to a web site in Malaysia. The link has already been disabled by the web hosting company, however this should be a warning to all.

The Internal Revenue Service will not email any taxpayer with offers of refunds. Any email received should be deleted, and do not follow any link within the email.
