The Financial
Coalition Against Child Pornography has been established in a cooperative
effort by the leading credit card companies in an effort to combat profiteering
in online child pornography. The financial companies will team up with
law enforcement and The Center for Missing and Exploited Children, passing
on information regarding web sites dealing in child pornography.
Participating
institutions include PayPal, Visa, Citigroup, MasterCard, American Express,
Discover, and Bank of America.
From The Center
for Missing and Exploited Children Web Site:
"Launch of the
Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography to eradicate commercial child
pornography. The Coalition includes seventeen of the world’s most prominent
financial institutions and Internet industry leaders along with the National
Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) and the International
Centre for Missing & Exploited Children® (ICMEC).
Child pornography
has become a multi-billion dollar commercial enterprise and is among the
fastest growing businesses on the Internet. The Internet has enabled instant
access to child pornography by thousands and possibly millions of individuals
around the world. And the ability to use credit cards and other payment
methods has made purchasing child pornography easy. Companies are joining
the Financial Coalition Against Child Pornography to combine resources
to fight this disturbing trend. Child Pornography reports to NCMEC’s CyberTipline®,
a Congressionally funded reporting mechanism for cases of child sexual
exploitation, have dramatically increased from 24,000 reports in 2001 to
more than 340,000 today."
