An earthquake
measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale has struck 80 miles off the California
coast, west of Eureka, a city approximately 272 miles north of San Francisco.
According to the
US Geological Survey web site:
"A major
earthquake occurred at 02:50:54 (UTC) on Wednesday, June 15, 2005. The
magnitude 7.0 event has been located OFF THE COAST OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
(This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)"
"A minor earthquake
occurred at 9:17:16 PM (PDT) on Tuesday, June 14, 2005. The magnitude
3.7 event occurred 154 km (96 miles) W of Eureka, CA. The hypocentral
depth is 2 km ( 2 miles)."
Also according
to the US Geological Survey web site another earthquake occured in the
same vicinity, 20 minutes later.
"A minor earthquake
occurred at 9:37:10 PM (PDT) on Tuesday, June 14, 2005. The magnitude
3.5 event occurred 135 km (84 miles) WNW of Ferndale, CA. The hypocentral
depth is 24 km (15 miles)."
Tsunami Warnings
have been issued for coastal areas from the California-Mexico border to
the northern tip of Vancouver in Canada, USGS said.
