2005 Chatmag News. Yahoo Chatters
React to Chat Room Closing.
In a previous
news article, Chatmag News reported that Yahoo! had closed their user created
chat rooms. This closure was in an apparent response to a lawsuit
filed last year against Yahoo! and a KPRC-TV Houston "Troubleshooters"
expose`.
The following
are excerpts from Chatmag's discussion forum regarding the closure of the
Yahoo! chat rooms.
'I've
had the internet since I was 13, now i'm 21 and ever since then, i've used
Yahoo chat rooms. I've even been into the rooms with the 'questionable'
titles recently, and have not found anyone under the age of 20 in them..."
"I
believe what yahoo has done is wrong. By removing all user-created rooms,
many interest groups have lost out, and people in search of some 'naughty
fun' have lost out too."
"Now
the only rooms avaliable are the yahoo created ones, which fill rapidly
with 'bots' and people who continually ask why the user rooms don't work."
"I
seriously doubt that there was any need whatsoever to close the user-created
rooms in the Adult section of yahoo chat. By consenting to enter the Adult
chat rooms you are declaring that you are over the legal age in your country;
so if you are underage and something bad happens to you in them, then it's
your own fault."
"User-created
rooms should be removed from general chat topics where anyone can access
them. Yahoo have effectively 'carpet-bombed' the yahoo chat facility....
in such a way as the US Airforce is familiar... by eliminating everything
in sight but with many civilian losses and only a few intended targets
being removed."
"I
believe that yahoo will lose lots of clients in response to this closure
or usercreated rooms, as this is really the only reason that most people
visit yahoo chat, especially as the majority of the rooms are now populated
by 'bots'."
"I've
been using yahoo for the past 8 years... so i'm going to continue to use
their service in the hope that they'll fix it, but for people just starting
out in chatting, i'd recommend looking elsewhere for a chat service."
"I've
read your articles and I think that your idea of moderation for Yahoo Chat
is NOT a good idea... atleast for the adult areas. People come to Yahoo!
because they like to say and do as they please.. and if you allow somebody
to "moderate" the room.. it is up to that perso what is and isn't okay
by their standards. It opens up doors for people to "power trip" etc...
Maybe your idea of moderation may be good for the little kids rooms, etc...
Something like this will completely ruin Yahoo! Chat if not enabled properly."
"This
is the proverbial case of curing dandruff by decapitation. Instead of actually
doing something proactive to improve the chat environment (getting rid
of bots, moderating) they just cut off user chat rooms altogether."
"What
REALLY bothers me though is that nobody knew it happened. Everyone was
in the Yahoo rooms going "anyone else having problems getting into User
Rooms?" Their help pages had nothing about the change. Only by searching
Google news and finding the Chatmag article was able to know what happened
and reach the Yahoo page mentioning that the rooms were closed. I'm boycotting
Yahoo until they fix this -- moving all of my email to GMail and NEVER
clicking on an ad on thier pages.."
"I
happen to be an online rper, how am I suppose to meet my group without
a room?"
"IF
the parents would watch there children properly they would not have this
problem yahoo is not causeing it bad parenting is...they just want someone
to blame other than themselves..parents r more worried about how much $$
they make instead of who is watching there kids ..we losse out cause of
ignorant ppl who should not have kids ...I know this and yes I am a parent
and I watch my kids like a hwak if u can't watch ur kids then turn ur internet
off Cause ur not a good enough parent to take care of ur kids or watch
ur kids ..unplug ur comp put on a password DO SOMTHING MORE THAN BITCH
about what ur kids r doing when ur not spending time with them....take
the kids comps out of there room...I mean my god how much do u really trust
ur kids to let them have comps and then sue other ppl for ur own problems"
