Last weekend's
Yahoo! Instant Messenger outage has been traced to Level 3, a data centre
in North London, Great Britain. Cause of the outage has been identified
as heat related.
In The United
States, Myspace.com suffered much the same fate, being knocked offline
by the heat wave in California on Sunday.
Yahoo! users in
Great Britain complained of the inability to use the Yahoo! Instant Messenger
and Email services. All functions were back up and running by Monday afternoon.
In all cases,
backup generators and power sources also failed, illustrating the need
to upgrade sites to prevent future outages due to power requirements.
Although a large
number of Yahoo! customers were affected, the majority of the Yahoo! network
remained online, such was not the case of MySpace.com
MySpace.com has
experienced tremendous growth in the past year, while existing at one data
center, rather than several centers similar to other high trafficked sites.
For a high profile site to remain at a singular data center is to invite
future outages which will have an adverse impact on their bottom line,
and customers nerves.
