Hurricane Katrina,
now a Category 5 storm, is making a beeline for the city of New Orleans.
The Mayor of New Orleans has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the
city.
High tide at the
mouth of the Mississippi will occur at 5:28am, approximately an hour and
a half before the projected landfall at 7am Monday.
New Orleans lies
at or below sea level, and current estimates predict up to 15 feet of water
may inundate the city. The current population of New Orleans is approximately
484674, with a land area of 181 square miles.
At 8 a.m. Sunday
Katrina was centered about 250 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the
Mississippi River. It was moving to the west-northwest at about 12 mph.
Katrina is blamed for 7 deaths in South Florida as it made landfall last
Thursday near the Miami-Dade and Broward county line.
The last direct
hit from a hurricane occurred in 1965 when Hurricane Betsy pounded New
Orleans with 105 mile per hour winds and a 8 to 10 foot storm surge.
