The vigilante
group Perverted-Justice.com, contracted by Dateline NBC to conduct stings
has competition in a new web site, entitled Justice-Perverted.com. Indications
on the Justice-Perverted.com site point to a possible connection between
the two.
The logo on the
site is an exact duplicate of Perverted-Justice's, with the exception
of the transposition of the names.
Also, according
to the Author header tag of Justice-Perverted.com, it shows "<META NAME="Author"
CONTENT="Phoebus Apollo">" The name Phoebus Apollo is used by Phillip
Eide's partner at Perverted-Justice.com. Whether this is the same individual
or an imitator is unknown.
Overall, Justice-Perverted.com
operates in the same manner as Perverted-Justice.com, conducting "busts"
in online chat rooms, and posting the information on their web site. Several
"busts" are currently posted, but without the usual Perverted-Justice.com
names and telephone numbers included.
Justice-Perverted.com
also contains a discussion forum, with some disturbing postings. A help
wanted request is contained within the Justice-Perverted site forum. In
the help wanted section, there is a request for "monitors".
According to the
posting,
"Monitors – When
a perpetrator elects to install monitor software on their own PC to be
removed from this site, this software will be emailing chat contacts to
the Monitor that are under aged or have no DOB on the Yahoo, MSN or AOL
profile. It will be your job to determine if the perpetrator has returned
to chatting with children. This software does not spy on the individuals
internet browsing, it does not record chats. It only identifies the profiles
contacted. This will require a dedicated individual who is fair and does
not interfere with that persons life. You may be required to contact the
police if the perpetrator has contacted and is holding a conversation with
a REAL child."
While the forum
posting mentions, "elects to install monitor software on their own PC to
be removed from this site", it is not known if this approach violates any
right to privacy laws. The practice of home monitoring in the United States
is reserved for those already convicted in a court of law, and ordered
monitored by a Judge.
Such monitoring
by an online vigilante group may be legal, however the Justice-Perverted.com
site infers that in order to have the "bust" removed, the monitoring software
must be installed. This is a clear indication of potential blackmail charges
against the Justice-Perverted site.
Also within the
forum, a posting asks "This site is a complete rip off of Perverted-Justice.com?
You appear to have copied the exact text of their site word for word!
What exactly are
you trying to accomplish here?"
The reply by the
Justice-Perverted.com site administrator is: "We are the same people."
It is also noted
that the site administrator for Justice-Perverted.com uses an avatar lifted
from the Community Expansion Pack on Bioware.com, an online role playing
gaming site. It is known that Phillip Eide is a prolific online gamer,
and in addition to his partner cited as the site author, further points
to his possible involvement in the Justice-Perverted.com site.
Quotes Pete Carr,
owner of Chatmag.com, "This could be a site affiliated with Perverted-Justice.com
and using a "test marketing" of the monitoring system, or it could also
be a site not affiliated with Perverted-Justice.com, but designed to embarrass
Perverted-Justice.com. In any event, the site reinforces my stance against
online vigilante groups, of any sort".
