Charles Henson,
39, of Wisconsin, is charged in Bristol Crown Court (UK), with attempted
murder, trying to administer noxious chemicals, aggravated burglary and
wounding with intent in an attack at the Coleford in Gloucestershire (UK)
home of his estranged wife, Allison Phelps.
Ms. Phelps had
met Mr. Henson in 2004, on an Internet web site targeting practitioners
of BDSM, and the Gorean Philosophy. Henson traveled to the United Kingdom
in March of 2005, attending a bondage gear bazaar with Ms. Phelps. Ms.
Phelps and Mr. Henson married in July of 2005, and Mr. Henson returned
to The United States in Febuary of 2006 when his Visa expired.
In September of
2005, Allison Phelps met and took the last name of her new lover, Michael
Phelps.
Henson returned
to The United Kingdom and on March 4th, 2006, Henson is alleged to have
carried out an attack at the home of Ms. Phelps, by turning on the gas
burners, and laying in wait. Henson then, according to testimony, attacked
Ms. Phelps with a latex glove, shoving it down her throat. Ms. Phelps is
said to have a severe allergy to latex, and Mr. Henson had on his possession
nine latex gloves and several knives.
Michael Phelps,
in residence at the time, grappled with Mr. Henson, and sustained four
knife wounds, requiring 35 stitches.
In Court, the
relationship between Charles Henson and Allison Phelps had been described
as a "Gorean Master and slave", although no connection to the worldwide
Gorean community has been established.
The Gorean philosophy
and lifestyle is based on a series of books written over the past thirty
years by John Norman, and describes a patriarchal society native to the
fictional planet Gor and replete with Masters, Free Women, slaves, and
involving a Caste system.
Although using
the same basic "Master-slave" terminology as BDSM, most Goreans do not
align themselves with the practice of BDSM.
